Jonathan David netted a brace as Canada, co-hosts of the World Cup, secured a resounding 4-2 victory over Ukraine during a friendly encounter at BMO Field on Saturday.
The Canadian side, managed by Jesse Marsch, made an impressive start with David opening the scoring. He capitalised on a rebound from his own header, which Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin had palmed away following a cross from Tajon Buchanan.
Buchanan, playing on the right wing, continued to trouble the Ukrainian defence with his pace and skill, assisting in the second goal by delivering a pinpoint cross that David deftly glanced into the net.
Canada’s high pressing strategy proved effective, resulting in a turnover that allowed Promise David to break away and confidently score his first international goal, extending the lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute.
After the interval, opportunities kept coming, with substitute Jayden Nelson striking the post as Canada aimed to fully dominate the match against their opponents.
The fourth goal was scored in the 81st minute when Luc De Fougerolles directed a header towards goal, which Buchanan then prodded home.
In the dying moments, Ukraine managed to find some consolation through a goal by Illia Zabarnyi and a penalty converted by Oleksandr Zinchenko.
This match forms part of a four-team mini-tournament known as The Canadian Shield, which also includes New Zealand and the Ivory Coast.
Canada is set to face the Ivory Coast on Tuesday as they prepare for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup later this month.
