John van ‘t Schip, the former Ajax manager and ex-Dutch international, has been named the new manager of the Armenian national team, as confirmed by the FFA on Monday.
Signing a one-year contract with the option for an additional year, van ‘t Schip will be joined by fellow former Netherlands international Aron Winter, who will serve as his assistant.
Having been out of work since leaving Ajax—where he made 348 appearances as a player between 1981 and 1982—last summer, the Dutchman took the helm at Ajax in October 2023 following the dismissal of Maurice Steijn. Steijn was let go after Ajax found themselves at the bottom of the Dutch Eredivisie.
During van ‘t Schip’s tenure, Ajax secured a fifth-place finish, earning a spot in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
This is not van ‘t Schip’s first venture with Ajax; he briefly took on the role of caretaker manager after Marco van Basten stepped down in May 2009. He returned to his assistant role the following year and has since managed clubs including Melbourne City in Australia, Guadalajara in Mexico, PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, and the Greek national team.
The 61-year-old will oversee his first matches in charge of Armenia in March, where they will face Georgia in the UEFA Nations League promotion/relegation playoffs. Armenia finished as runners-up in group C4, securing their place in these playoffs.
As part of their World Cup qualifying campaign, Armenia is set to compete against Hungary, the Republic of Ireland, and another team from the Nations League playoffs.
