Former Dutch international Jean-Paul van Gastel has been appointed as the new manager of Indonesian Liga 1 club PSIM Yogyakarta, as confirmed by the club.
Van Gastel, who previously served as an assistant to Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Besiktas, had been without a position since van Bronckhorst’s exit from the Turkish club in November 2024.
The ex-NAC Breda and Guangzhou City manager has signed a one-year contract with Yogyakarta, making him the fourth Dutch coach in Indonesia’s top division, joining the ranks of Johnny Jansen (Bali United), Jan Olde Riekerink (Dewa United), and Peter de Roo (PERSIS).
Technical director Razzi Mutani expressed pride in announcing the arrival of the five-time Dutch international.
“He successfully guided a first-division team back to the Eredivisie and has extensive experience at the highest levels in both the Netherlands and Turkey. We intend to leverage that expertise here.”
PSIM Yogyakarta earned promotion to Liga 1 by defeating FC Bhayangkara 2-1 after extra time in the play-off final held in February.
