Australian import James O’Connor is making a strong case for a starting position after the Crusaders delivered a convincing 42-19 victory over the Blues on Saturday night.
This marked the first away win for the Crusaders since 2023, while the reigning champions, the Blues, now find themselves with a disappointing 1-5 record as their tough season continues.
O’Connor showcased his skills once more with a prominent performance off the bench at Eden Park, setting up a try for Macca Springer with a perfectly executed kick.
“You should have seen the response from the Crusaders players towards James O’Connor,” commented Justin Marshall.
“They recognise the significance of that try. He identified the gap and opted for the kick rather than a risky pass that could have brought some trouble. Springer was left unmarked and unchallenged.”
Fellow All Blacks legend Jeff Wilson shared his admiration for O’Connor’s performance.

“It’s fantastic to see such vision and execution from an experienced player,” said Wilson, noting that O’Connor’s superior goalkicking could place pressure on starting kicker Taha Kemara, who has been struggling with his accuracy.
“With O’Connor taking the goal-kicking duties, the Crusaders could have exerted greater control over the match if some kicks had gone through.”
“Could James O’Connor be edging closer to a starting role?”

Plagued by injuries and struggling with form and confidence, the Blues are now fighting to secure a spot in the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs.
The Crusaders left Auckland with a bonus point, regaining second place and marking their first away win under coach Rob Penney.
This performance reflected the traditional strength of the Crusaders, who have historically been dominant over their opponents.
Outstanding contributions came from loose forwards Cullen Grace and Christian Lio-Willie, along with hooker Ioane Moananu, as the visiting pack overpowered the Blues on their home ground.
Kemara and halfback Kyle Preston formed an effective partnership once more, while Stephen Perofeta’s return at No.10 for the Blues lasted a mere 53 minutes amid a challenging outing.
The Blues are dealing with an extensive injury list.
Captain Patrick Tuipulotu (ankle) and Kurt Eklund (groin) were confirmed absentees prior to kickoff.
However, the nature of professional sport is often unforgiving.
Just ask the Crusaders.
They endured their own injury struggles last year, failing to reach the playoffs, and sympathy was in short supply.
Penney’s side is now looking to make amends in his second year, positioning themselves once again as serious contenders for the title.
They can also rely on the luxury of introducing an international talent like O’Connor from the bench.
Late tries from Marcel Renata and Finlay Christie for Cotter’s team provided little more than consolation.
This defeat marked their fifth loss in six matches during what is rapidly becoming a disappointing title defence.
Will Jordan’s late try signalled the onset of an exodus of disgruntled Auckland fans, finalising an impressive seven-try performance from the Crusaders at Eden Park.
