Former Essendon coach James Hird has a straightforward message for Richmond defender Noah Balta: “keep your distance.”
Balta is set to receive sentencing in April for his involvement in an assault on a man last December, an incident to which he has already confessed guilt.
Initially, the Tigers suspended him for six weeks as a consequence of the incident, leaving a two-week window before his sentencing during which he could be selected for AFL matches.

The Tigers have opted to field him in the VFL during Gather Round, a decision that has resulted in him being followed by a media throng to and from the game.
Hird, who has his own experience with media scrutiny stemming from the Essendon supplements controversy, advises Balta to keep out of the spotlight until after his court date.
“Having been pursued relentlessly by cameras for a year, I think he would be better off sitting this one out. Just take some time away and come back later. Staying away is ultimately what’s best for him,” Hird remarked on Nine’s Footy Classified.
“I understand the desire to go out and play to prove critics wrong, but being trailed like a criminal throughout that period is hardly enjoyable. It’s not fun at all.”

Geelong coach Chris Scott provided his perspective on how AFL players should be dealt with regarding disciplinary actions.
“When we at Geelong consider these matters, it’s essential to remember that each case is distinct, and setting precedents can be difficult,” Scott commented.
“One point I would raise is that Balta has already served a suspension. While I recognise he’s yet to receive a legal verdict.”
“It seems that we approach it as if AFL players are penalised once and then face additional repercussions without ample opportunity for redemption.”
Richmond has firmly stated that Balta will be available for selection in the upcoming match against Gold Coast.
