Jack Grealish, the Manchester City sensation, dedicated his long-awaited goal during Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Leicester to his late brother.
Grealish found the back of the net from close range in just the second minute at the Etihad Stadium, marking his first Premier League goal in 16 months.
The 29-year-old England winger made his first league start since last December, helping City reclaim fourth place in their quest for Champions League qualification to turn around a challenging season.
This goal came on the 25th anniversary of the passing of his younger brother, Keelan, who tragically died at just nine months old.
“This day is always tough for the family, but scoring brought me joy,” Grealish remarked.
“My mum and dad were here. This day isn’t easy for us, so to win and to score was fantastic.”
Grealish has found it challenging to secure regular game time this season due to fitness and form issues, losing his spot to the likes of Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, and Savinho.
Nevertheless, Guardiola has lauded Grealish’s resilience in dealing with these hurdles.
“Jack is an incredible person; his gestures are remarkable and he’s extremely generous,” Guardiola commented.
“I wasn’t aware of that. I can’t imagine how difficult it has been, but to celebrate with his mum, dad, sister, and family is wonderful.
“He scored a goal and played well. I’m pleased for him as I know it’s tough when you aren’t playing consistently.“
Omar Marmoush added the second goal in the 29th minute, and City comfortably managed the rest of the match, pushing second-from-bottom Leicester closer to relegation, with the Foxes now 12 points adrift of safety.
“It wasn’t easy to break down a side defending with 10 players in their box, and we missed a chance for a third that would have made it more comfortable,” Guardiola said.
“However, we didn’t concede any opportunities until late in the game, so I’m happy with the performance overall.“
Guardiola also provided an update regarding Erling Haaland’s injury, which he sustained during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth.
The striker has since received specialist care from Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona.
“He has assessed him, and we’re anticipating a recovery time of five to six weeks,” Guardiola added.
