Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed that he has “never felt so appreciated” following an emotional send-off from fans as he raised the Premier League trophy at Anfield on Sunday.
He bid farewell after stepping onto the pitch for the second half during the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, marking Liverpool’s final match of the season.
In contrast to his previous home game, where he faced boos after revealing he would be leaving when his contract expires, the Liverpool native received an overwhelmingly warm reception from supporters.
Upon the presentation of the Premier League trophy after the match, fans recognised the academy graduate, who is set to conclude his 20-year association with the club amid strong speculation about a move to Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold waved to the audience and kissed the badge on his shirt, with the passionate supporters in the renowned Kop stand erupting in cheers as he lifted the trophy in front of them.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when stepping out at Anfield after the events of the past few weeks,” he shared with Sky Sports.
“I wanted to represent the club one last time and (Liverpool manager) Arne Slot placed his trust in me to play. The reception I received means more than anything to me.”
“I’ve played hundreds of matches for this club, but I’ve never felt so cherished and cared for as I did today.”
“I truly hope that one day the fans will recognise the effort and everything I’ve contributed to the team.”
“There hasn’t been a day, minute, or second that I haven’t thought about the team. Twenty years is a long time, but I’ve relished every single moment of it, both the highs and the lows.”
“It has been an honour and a privilege to be a part of this club. I’ll cherish this day forever. It’s incredibly special to me and will be remembered as the best day of my life.”
