Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire found a humorous angle on Carlton’s dramatic collapse over the weekend following Richmond’s remarkable triumph.
The Blues were leading by a staggering 41 points during the second quarter but were dramatically overtaken by the Tigers, marking the largest comeback victory in the club’s history.
During an appearance on Nine’s Eddie and Jimmy podcast, co-host Jimmy Bartel revealed that rival fans were calling into 3AW Radio well into the night to revel in Carlton’s misfortune.
“It was truly remarkable,” he commented.

McGuire concurred, remarking that “it brought great joy to many” with a knowing grin.
The Tigers secured their win when Seth Campbell celebrated his final goal with an impressive backflip.
“That was brilliant,” Bartel noted.
McGuire also revealed that he was attending a dinner at the time, beside Visit Victoria chief executive and Carlton supporter Brendan McClements.
With laughter, he recounted the evening before expressing optimism for the Blues’ future.
“Carlton will recover … I have a great love for the game, and I always tell people that if you knew what would happen, you wouldn’t bother showing up,” he explained.
“Everyone was saying Richmond wouldn’t win a game, Carlton were on the rise, and Collingwood were just too old and slow … and for the young Tigers to turn it around like that, you couldn’t script it,” he said.
“If this were a movie, it would make Rocky look like a documentary.”
“It was astounding to see Carlton leading by 41 points, yet at the last moment they were caught off guard as the momentum shifted dramatically.”
