Former NSW Blues captain James Tedesco has shared that he feels much more at ease about potentially missing out on selection this year, a stark contrast to how he felt after being dropped last season.
Tedesco, who has played 22 consecutive matches as the Blues’ fullback since the last game of the 2016 series, found himself replaced by Dylan Edwards for the upcoming 2024 series.
However, an injury to Edwards provided Tedesco with a surprise call-up for the series opener in Sydney. Despite his return, Edwards made a full recovery and played in games two and three, which the Blues won to secure the shield.

Reflecting on last year’s matches, Tedesco admitted it was challenging to watch the dramatic comeback. Yet, he’s found enjoyment in watching the initial two games of the 2025 series.
“Last year was tough for me to watch … it was somewhat awkward,” he said during an appearance on Nine’s Freddy and the Eighth.
“Having been part of the team since 2016 without missing a match, it felt strange to watch from the sidelines … but this year, I’ve been quite relaxed. I didn’t expect to play Origin.”
“There was a lot of noise around it, but I never anticipated being picked. I realised they’d probably stick with Dyl (Edwards), who has been playing exceptional football and helped the team win last year.”

Instead of wallowing in nostalgia, Tedesco revealed that this year’s series has allowed him to do the opposite.
“I’ve genuinely taken a step back and enjoyed watching the footy this season – including club matches,” he remarked.

“In previous years, I wasn’t so keen to watch too much footy. I preferred to focus on my own game and my role at the Roosters.
“This year, I’ve genuinely loved watching the games as a fan and learning from what I see.”
Now at 32, Tedesco and his wife Maria tied the knot in January 2023, and they have welcomed a daughter named Rosie, with a second daughter expected in August.
The Roosters captain expressed how fatherhood has transformed his outlook on both life and football.
“It’s been absolutely amazing. I used to think my career was mainly about me and what I wanted. Now, it’s all about my family,” he explained.
“I look forward to coming home to my little girl. When she runs up to me and hugs me, it’s just the best feeling. I’m excited about growing our family further.”
Tedesco also shared that Rosie is starting to grasp the significance of his profession.
“She points at the television when she sees footy and says ‘Da da!’ It’s such a cool experience. I absolutely love it.”
