Scott Pendlebury, a seasoned player for Collingwood, has expressed his support for a mid-season trade period, although he questions whether the AFL is “mature enough” to effectively manage it at this point.
This statement follows a challenging week for West Coast’s Oscar Allen, who made headlines after being spotted having a public meeting with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell.
The AFL nearly introduced a mid-season trading window for the 2025 season, but ultimately hesitated due to objections from clubs outside Victoria.
“I’m all in favour of a mid-season trade period,” Pendlebury shared with 9News Melbourne.
“But are we mature enough? That’s a fair question.
“I’m not sure if we, as an industry, are ready for it. In light of the Oscar Allen situation, it raises the question of whether we are managing these matters maturely enough.
“However, I genuinely believe it will be implemented eventually. It’s just a matter of time, not if. It would definitely enhance competition, allowing clubs to rejuvenate their rosters more quickly.
“It’s important to remember that we have a strict salary cap in play. Clubs can’t just overspend to bring players in; those players would need to accept less or more to make a move.”
“Personally, I think it keeps the sport relevant in the media, sparking discussion about potential trades and creating excitement. I’m a strong proponent of it.”
Pendlebury feels that all clubs should be aggressive in attracting star players and sees no issue with the interactions surrounding Allen.

West Coast’s Oscar Allen conveys his apologies to the fans. Nine
“The game has evolved significantly since I began my career,” the former Magpies captain noted.
“My main point is this: it’s happening everywhere. Oscar Allen isn’t the only player having discussions with Sam Mitchell.
“If he’s a free agent or just a year or two away from becoming one, clubs are definitely looking at him, speaking to him, and connecting with his management.
“Perhaps as an industry we’re a bit taken aback that it got noticed, but we can’t be naive enough to think it’s not happening. Throughout my career, I’ve been chatting with players from other clubs — definitely with those who are one, two, or three years away from free agency — trying to initiate conversations.
“That’s simply the nature of the industry, and honestly, you want to be the club that excels in this area because attracting top talent is vital if you want to secure premierships.”
