Inter Milan must keep their focus following a disappointing late defeat to Bologna on Sunday, according to coach Simone Inzaghi, after the champions allowed their lead in the league standings to dwindle.
Inter conceded in stoppage time when Bologna’s substitute, Riccardo Orsolini, clinched a 1-0 victory for the home side, leaving Inter level on 71 points with second-placed Napoli.
“It was a well-matched game, with minimal interference from the goalkeepers,” Inzaghi told reporters.
“We put in an organised performance with great effort. In the second half, we could have capitalised on some opportunities more effectively, and ultimately, the last incident proved costly. Regardless, we must not let this defeat influence our journey.”
Inter, one of the select few clubs to have achieved a league, cup, and Champions League treble, may have the chance to replicate that success this season.
“I was pleased with our performance because I thought we could have faced more challenges against a team like Bologna,” Inzaghi added.
“While I am disheartened by the result, Bologna is undoubtedly a formidable side.”
Inter were missing some pivotal players, with forward Marcus Thuram joining midfielder Piotr Zielinski and defender Denzel Dumfries on the sidelines earlier in the week.
“We certainly felt the absence of Dumfries and Thuram, but we’ve become accustomed to these circumstances as we often struggle to field our strongest lineup,” said Inzaghi.
“Tonight, we need to assess the defeat with a level head, setting aside any frustration. The team is understandably upset and tense at the moment, but we will reflect on this later; our season is far from over.”
Thuram, who leads Inter’s scoring chart in Serie A with 14 goals, was sidelined for the clash against Bologna due to a thigh injury and is doubtful for Wednesday’s return leg in the Coppa Italia semi-finals against AC Milan.
