Inter Milan’s head coach Simone Inzaghi acknowledged that the toll of a demanding season is becoming apparent following his side’s 3-1 victory over Cagliari, which reinforced their position at the top of Serie A on Saturday.
This home win maintains Inter’s six-point lead over second-placed Napoli, who are set to take on relegation-threatened Empoli on Monday.
Inzaghi’s squad is also competing in the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, resulting in a packed fixture schedule.
“We put considerable emphasis on this match and were aware of the challenges it presented,” Inzaghi relayed to the media. “Although we momentarily lost focus for their goal, the team stayed sharp for the remainder of the match. We’re committed to this journey, and though it’s tough, it fills us with pride.
“Last season, we played a total of 49 matches; this year, we’ve already reached 48, and it’s only April 12. It’s been a taxing season, but we are learning to adapt, with everyone making sacrifices to support the cause.”
Inzaghi noted that the protracted campaign is exacting a heavy toll on the players in multiple aspects.
“In addition to physical fatigue, there’s mental exhaustion. Maintaining focus is challenging, but I’m fortunate to manage a squad that gives their all for these colours,” he remarked.
“We need to stay the course, keeping in mind that we still have six league games remaining along with other commitments. It requires significant sacrifice, and we are prepared to deliver on the pitch.”
Inter’s next challenge is to host Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.
“We approach this match with great confidence, knowing we are up against one of the top three or four teams in the world,” Inzaghi expressed. “We must duplicate the performance from the first leg, playing with speed, intensity, and structure.”
Furthermore, Inter will take on AC Milan in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final on April 23, with the aggregate score level at 1-1.
