The Western Sydney Wanderers have been advised to conduct a “thorough evaluation this off-season” regarding their next steps with star forward Nicolas Milanovic.
Milanovic is currently enjoying a stellar season, serving as the leading figure in Western Sydney’s pursuit of a Championship title, as they embark on their most promising run in a decade.
With nine goals already in his breakout 2023-24 season, the 23-year-old has hit a personal best with 12 goals and six assists, catapulting the Wanderers to fourth in the league standings amidst a 10-match unbeaten run.
This follows Milanovic’s decision to turn down overseas offers at the end of last season to extend his contract with Western Sydney. Now, the Wanderers are faced with a critical choice regarding a player valued at “millions.”

In a recent episode of Total A-Leagues, host and Sydney Morning Herald journalist Rugari remarked: “Milanovic has been sensational.”
“As you noted, he has 12 goals and six assists. The pressing question for the club is what to do with him. This league is increasingly becoming an export market, with player sales and transfer fees on the rise.”
“He is under contract for next season, which compels the Wanderers to seriously contemplate whether to sell him while his market value is at its peak; they wouldn’t want to lose him for nothing.”
“Unlike the situation with Adrian Segecic at Sydney FC, which could yield training compensation if he were to move abroad, Milanovic doesn’t qualify as he’s too old.”
“The dilemma is whether they can convince him to re-sign, or if they should consider parting ways now, even if it’s not their preference. The question remains, how much could they potentially secure for Milanovic?”
Retired Socceroo and former A-Leagues star Tommy Oar responded: “Given the current market, considering the transfer fees for other players in the league, I believe you’re looking at a few million because I rate him extremely highly.”
“His potential is immense. What sets him apart from many other emerging talents is his efficiency in front of goal; he seldom needs more than one chance to find the back of the net. His left foot and the way he approaches defenders is commendable.”
“Even during games when the Wanderers aren’t at their best, he consistently manages to produce standout moments or ignite a spark. However, the club must also consider the implications of losing him: what gaps would that create in the squad?”
“Replacing someone of his calibre is no easy feat. If you look domestically, there haven’t been many players in the last two seasons of the A-League who have made such an impact, let alone consistently.”
“If the Wanderers aim to secure silverware in the medium to long term, retaining players of his quality is vital.”
Milanovic has also put himself in contention for the Subway Socceroos, given his consistent performances as the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup approaches.
He is only one goal away from the Golden Boot leader and two shy of the record for the most goal contributions this season, trailing Macarthur Bulls’ Marin Jakolis (20).
Milanovic has recorded the fifth-most goals across the competition since last season, along with the third-most goal contributions (32) during the same period.

“Another factor Milanovic must consider is the impending World Cup next year,” Rugari stated. “We’d likely both have him included in a current Socceroos squad.”
“His fit in Tony Popovic’s system, particularly with the use of inverted wingers, could be exceptional. He’ll need to weigh his options: is it better for him to remain in the A-League, dominate, and elevate his game further next season?
“Alternatively, does he believe that moving overseas could improve his chances, especially given Popovic’s emphasis on physical fitness and European competition? Can he succeed at that level and integrate himself into the mix?”
Oar added: “Ultimately, it depends on the opportunities presented and the Wanderers’ willingness to accept an appropriate offer. If the right club or league doesn’t materialise, I believe he’d be content to stay with the Wanderers. He’s a crowd favourite and plays a pivotal role in the squad.”
“Historically, we’ve seen players from the A-League perform well on the world stage at the World Cup, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility—but this is definitely a situation to keep an eye on.”
