Inter Milan’s forward, Mehdi Taremi, is currently unable to leave Tehran due to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, leading to his absence from the opening matches of the FIFA Club World Cup. This was confirmed by the Italian club on Saturday.
The 32-year-old player had travelled to Iran for international duty last week, where he notably scored during a 3-0 win against North Korea in a World Cup qualifying match.
Unfortunately, Taremi has been unable to secure a flight to meet up with his Inter team-mates in Los Angeles amid the ongoing conflict.
An Inter source has corroborated to AFP that Taremi remains stranded in his home country.
The club is set to kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Mexican side Monterrey on Tuesday at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, located east of Los Angeles.
This match will also mark the debut of the new Inter coach, Cristian Chivu, who was appointed on Monday following Simone Inzaghi’s departure after the team’s 5-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
During an introductory press conference held at the team’s base in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Chivu expressed confidence in Inter’s ability to recover from the disappointments of narrowly missing out on the Serie A title and the Champions League final.
The 44-year-old former Romanian international shared that Inter could reflect on the previous season with a sense of pride.
“We mustn’t overlook the journey this team has taken – it was an impressive season,” Chivu stated.
“This squad possesses exceptional quality. They made it to the final stretch but ultimately didn’t secure the trophies. This season should not be deemed a failure.”
“We eliminated Bayern and Barcelona in the Champions League. We were at the top of the league, ranking among the best in Europe, for an extended period. Therefore, we should not forget this. Failure does not exist in football; what’s truly regrettable is making excuses.”
