Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi is currently unable to leave Tehran due to the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, resulting in him missing the commencement of the FIFA Club World Cup, as confirmed by the Italian club on Saturday.
Taremi was in Iran for international duty last week, where he scored during a 3-0 win over North Korea in a World Cup qualifying match.
Unfortunately, the 32-year-old could not secure a flight to reunite with his Inter teammates in Los Angeles due to the current conflict.
An Inter source informed AFP that Taremi remains stuck in his home country.
Inter are set to kick off their Club World Cup journey against Mexican outfit Monterrey on Tuesday at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, situated east of Los Angeles.
This match will also mark the debut of new Inter coach Cristian Chivu, who was appointed on Monday to replace Simone Inzaghi, following the team’s 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
During an introductory press conference held at the team’s base in Beverly Hills on Saturday, Chivu expressed that Inter is determined to recover from the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the Serie A title and the Champions League trophy.
The 44-year-old former Romanian international remarked that Inter have plenty to be proud of from their season.
“We must remember this team’s journey—it’s been a remarkable season,” Chivu stated.
“This squad possesses immense talent. They fought until the very end but fell short of the silverware. It wasn’t a failed season.”
“We eliminated Bayern and Barcelona in the Champions League. For a significant part of the season, we were at the top of the league—one of the best in Europe. So we can’t overlook that. In football, failure doesn’t exist; making excuses is what failure looks like.”
