Inter Milan’s treble ambitions remain very much alive after they secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday, drawing 2-2 with Bayern Munich, which sealed a thrilling 4-3 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals.
The Serie A champions will take on Barcelona in the semi-finals following a rapid-fire response from captain Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard, which negated Harry Kane’s equaliser for Bayern in the 52nd minute.
Bayern’s Eric Dier managed to salvage a draw on the night with a looping header in the 76th minute amid the pouring rain and gusty winds in Milan, but it ultimately wasn’t enough for Vincent Kompany’s squad to continue their quest for a seventh European title.
Simone Inzaghi’s players held their ground in challenging conditions at the San Siro, where torrential rain and strong winds hampered the teams’ efforts to deliver their best performances while heightening the stakes of an already intense match.
“We don’t back down; we have character, heart, and intelligence. We were certainly on the defensive at times, but we demonstrated again today that we can achieve great things,” Martinez expressed to Amazon Prime.
Inter remain in contention for a repeat of the treble that José Mourinho led them to in 2010, sitting three points clear of Napoli in Serie A and set to face AC Milan in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup.
Wednesday’s performance proved that Inter possess the capability to reach the final of Europe’s premier club competition, reminiscent of their close encounter with Manchester City two years ago.
“We aim to win everything from the outset of every season, because if we don’t, then we shouldn’t be in this sport. That’s our mindset,” Martinez added.
Inter will enjoy the advantage of hosting the second leg of their clash with Barcelona, a team they defeated in the semi-finals en route to victory in Madrid 15 years ago, at the San Siro on May 6.
