FIFA President Gianni Infantino has teased Atlanta’s potential candidacy as a host for the 2031 Women’s World Cup while presenting the Club World Cup trophy at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday evening.
In the company of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Infantino commended the city’s sporting reputation ahead of this summer’s enhanced Club World Cup tournament. “Atlanta has truly evolved into a soccer city,” Infantino remarked.
“The very fact that the stadium was constructed to accommodate both football and soccer at the same time underscores the city’s commitment to the sport and its significance to everyone involved in athletics here.”
During the tournament, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host six matches, including three knockout rounds, with the event scheduled to take place from June 15 to July 13.
Infantino noted that strong hosting performances could bolster Atlanta’s chances for future events. “It can be beneficial for the Women’s World Cup, which is potentially coming up in 2031 in this region,” he stated.
“We are actively seeking the best host cities for that World Cup as well, and it’s clear that Atlanta has the potential to earn some points in that area.”
The expanded Club World Cup, featuring 32 teams, will yield $1 billion in prize money for participating sides.
The 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup is slated to take place in the United States, marking the third occasion the nation will host the tournament following previous events in 1999 and 2003.
This iteration will also be the first to showcase an increased field of 48 teams, rising from 32, reflecting the surging global interest in women’s football.
