Kevin De Bruyne, midfielder for Manchester City, has expressed doubts about participating in the upcoming Club World Cup, citing fears of sustaining an injury as he prepares to bid farewell to the club.
The 33-year-old Belgian international will be departing City after a remarkable ten-year tenure, during which he has secured six Premier League titles, alongside triumphs in both the Champions League and the Club World Cup in 2023.
Despite being under contract until June 30, which coincides with the three matches of the Club World Cup in the United States, De Bruyne acknowledged the necessity of prioritising his own well-being.
“I believe I need to look after myself because if I suffer an injury during the Club World Cup, what happens next? No one will be looking out for me then,” he remarked following the FA Cup final, as reported by The Athletic.
“So there’s a strong possibility that I won’t participate, but I’m not sure. I’m just a player—I don’t set the rules, and I can’t influence the decisions made.
“Ultimately, as I said, I need to prioritise my own welfare.”
The tournament, featuring 32 teams, is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 13.
