West Coast captain Oscar Allen was visibly emotional when discussing his well-being following a challenging month.
The Eagles forward found himself under intense scrutiny after a discussion with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell became public, prompting him to hold a press conference where he extended an apology to disappointed fans.
As he enters free agency at the end of the season, Allen has been strongly linked with potential moves to either the Hawks or Brisbane.
During an appearance on Mix94.5 in Perth on Thursday, the 26-year-old expressed his frustration regarding the negative interpretation of the meeting.
“It’s been a tough four to five weeks, especially as our team isn’t performing well—we haven’t secured a win yet—and I’ve also struggled with my own form, so there are a few factors at play,” said Allen.

“To provide some context, I’ve known Mitch (Sam Mitchell) since I was 18, and we’ve shared a long-standing rapport.
“When I met with Sam, I felt it was unfair that people were upset about it being public. I had invited him over to my house for a private dinner. There was no one else there.
“It was simply two mates having a conversation about my current situation and how I’ve been performing this year.
“Given his history as the premiership captain of Hawthorn in 2008, I was keen to hear how they dealt with tough seasons. We had a valuable discussion.
“Unfortunately, the narrative got misconstrued as if I’d met him in public. I completely understand why fans were frustrated, but I never anticipated it becoming such a significant issue.”
When asked about handling the pressure, Allen became emotional in his response.
“I’m feeling much better now. It was undoubtedly a tough period. I love West Coast and playing footy, but I wasn’t able to perform either well,” Allen shared, his voice wavering.
“As a result, the lines blur between your identity as a player and as a person. Playing footy is something I’ve cherished since childhood, and when my job isn’t going well, it feels like everyone is against me. My performance has fallen short.
“It was difficult, but I’ve had an incredible support network around me, including my partner, family, and the footy club, who have all backed me through this. I’m eager to return to my best form.”
Nine chief AFL reporter Tom Morris has suggested that Allen is likely to head to Brisbane once the season concludes.
