Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon appears poised to miss the League Cup final against Liverpool after receiving a red card for violent conduct during the match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat after extra time in the FA Cup fifth round, with Gordon’s dismissal for pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the face adding to their woes.
A sending-off for violent conduct typically incurs a three-match suspension, which would exclude the England international from participating in the Wembley showdown on March 16.
“It seemed harsh, but we will need to review it thoroughly. I haven’t seen a replay, so I’m speaking from my immediate impression, which was that it looked tough,” said manager Eddie Howe.
When asked about the possibility of an appeal by Newcastle, Howe responded: “It’s a possibility. Anthony didn’t intend any harm. I spoke with him briefly before coming out to you all, and he was understandably very upset.”
Missing Gordon would be a significant setback for Newcastle as they aim to secure their first major trophy since 1955.
The 24-year-old has contributed nine goals and provided six assists across all competitions.
Newcastle will also be anxious about the fitness of top scorer Alexander Isak and fullback Kieran Trippier, both of whom struggled to complete the match due to injury concerns. Isak made his return after missing the previous Premier League defeat to Liverpool.
“We hope these injuries don’t develop into major issues for us, as that would be incredibly challenging,” Howe remarked. “We lack the squad depth that we would ideally like.”
