Hernan Crespo is making his return to Sao Paulo as head coach, four years on from guiding them to victory in the Brazilian Serie A championship, the club announced on Wednesday.
The former Argentina international, who has played for clubs such as Chelsea, Inter Milan, and AC Milan, has stepped in to replace compatriot Luis Zubeldia. Zubeldia parted ways with the club after managing to win just two of the first twelve league matches.
“Crespo is a fantastic professional who is already familiar with the club, has secured a title here, and now is the right time for his return. We are thrilled to welcome him back,” stated club president Julio Casares.
The 49-year-old’s initial tenure as coach of Sao Paulo concluded in October 2021, less than five months after he clinched the league title, due to a disappointing start to their title defence.
Crespo had a successful spell with Emirati club Al Ain, leading them to the Asian Champions League Elite title in May last year, which secured their spot in the current Club World Cup. However, he was dismissed in November after a series of poor results.
