Heartbroken Liverpool manager Arne Slot describes Diogo Jota as a ‘friend to all’

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, shared heartfelt sentiments about Diogo Jota, describing him as a “friend to everyone” following the tragic car accident that claimed the life of the Portuguese international on Thursday.

The 28-year-old’s untimely passing occurred alongside his younger brother, Andre, when their vehicle left the motorway in northern Spain and subsequently caught fire.

Since joining the Reds in 2020, Jota netted 65 goals in 182 matches, playing a vital role in Liverpool’s Premier League triumph during Slot’s inaugural season at the helm earlier this year.

“When the appropriate moment comes, we will honour Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals, and we will sing his anthem,” Slot expressed in a statement.

“For now, we will cherish the memory of his exceptional character and mourn his passing. He will always be remembered.”

In a beautiful turn of events, Jota wed his long-time partner and mother to their three children, Rute Cardoso, just a fortnight ago.

“My initial thoughts extend beyond that of a football manager. They resonate as a father, a son, a brother, and an uncle, directed towards the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who are grappling with such an unimaginable loss,” Slot added.

“My message to them is unmistakable – you will never walk alone.

“The players, staff, and supporters of Liverpool Football Club stand united with you, and from what I’ve witnessed today, the broader football community shares the same sentiment.”

Jota, who earned 49 caps for his national team, was held in high regard by Liverpool fans, who paid tribute by laying countless bouquets, jerseys, and flags at the club’s iconic Anfield Stadium.

“There’s so much I could say about what he contributed to our team, but the reality is, anyone who has watched Diogo play can see it,” remarked Slot.

“His hard work, passion, commitment, exceptional talent, and goals encompassed the very essence of what it means to be a Liverpool player.

“Yet, there were parts of him that not everyone witnessed. He was someone who didn’t seek fame but acquired it nonetheless. Not a friend to just a few, but a friend to all.

“He had a special way of making others feel better just by being around them, and he cared immensely for his family.”
