In a thrilling conclusion to Wednesday’s semi-final at the Under-21 European Championships, England secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Netherlands, thanks to a decisive late goal from Harvey Elliott.
England manager Lee Carsley was compelled to make a single adjustment to his lineup, with Tyler Morton sidelined due to suspension after accumulating two yellow cards during the tournament. In his place, Elliott Anderson slotted in to represent the Liverpool midfielder.
The Netherlands faced a tougher challenge, contending with three suspensions. Kenneth Taylor and captain Devyne Rensch were both out for receiving two yellow cards, while Ruben van Bommel was shown a red card during the quarter-final against Portugal. In response, Michael Reiziger brought in Antoni Milambo, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, and Ernest Poku to fill the gaps.
Kasanwirjo, who had played only 654 minutes across the season for Feyenoord and Rangers, struggled early on as Omari Hutchinson exploited the Dutch right flank. This created several opportunities for Harvey Elliott in the early stages, but Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs made two outstanding saves to keep his team in contention.
While England dominated the initial phases and Roefs again denied a threatening shot from James McAtee, the match then settled, allowing the Dutch to find their footing. Despite this, their two attempts on target lacked the potency to trouble the English defence.
The Netherlands came out strongly in the second half, forcing England keeper James Beadle into a vital save after Ian Maatsen unleashed a fierce strike from distance.
However, the Dutch resistance crumbled when Harvey Elliott delivered the opening goal in the 62nd minute, firing a close-range shot past Roefs at his near post, capitalising on a failed tackle from Jorrel Hato as the Dutch defence struggled to win critical battles.
In response, Reiziger’s side pressed forward and made a notable change by introducing Noah Ohio during a brief pause in play.
Ohio instantly took advantage of the situation when Elliott lost possession in his attacking half. An error from Aaron Cresswell allowed Ohio, still over 35 metres from goal, to curl in a stunning equaliser.
With the match at a pivotal moment, England replied with urgency. Just four minutes from full time, captain Harvey Elliott seized the opportunity in midfield and was inexplicably left unmarked by the Dutch defence, allowing him to unleash a shot that beat Roefs for the late winner.
Though the Dutch pushed hard in the dying moments, they couldn’t convert a last-gasp corner as their final efforts fell short. With Harvey Elliott’s brace, England secured their place in the U21 Euros final and will face the victor of the semi-final clash between Germany and France.
