Harry Kewell, the former Liverpool and Australian footballer, lauded Virgil van Dijk as the “finest centre-back” in the history of the Premier League during his discussion with Sky Sports.
Having spent five years at Anfield and featuring in 139 competitive matches, Kewell lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with the Reds in 2005.
The ex-winger shared his appreciation for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who made the switch from Eredivisie club Feyenoord in 2024. “He’s been outstanding. I doubt he could have hoped for a more perfect opportunity,” Kewell remarked, while also addressing Liverpool’s title ambitions.
“What I’m about to say may seem a bit harsh – but it has helped that Arsenal have struggled, Manchester City have had a rough time, Chelsea aren’t competing at the top, and no one has really tested him.”
“That said, he (Slot) made a fantastic impact at the beginning of the season. The way Liverpool performed early on is deserving of their current position.”
‘Difficult’ contract predicaments
On the tricky contract situations of key Liverpool players Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, Kewell termed it a “challenging” predicament for Slot and the club.
“You definitely don’t want to lose your top players, and losing a home-grown player like Alexander-Arnold would be particularly tough,” he added, as the right-back is being heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid.

“He’s an England international who has developed at the club, has performed exceptionally well, secured every accolade possible, and is likely one of the best natural crossers the Premier League has witnessed. If he were to leave, it would be disheartening, but the interest reinforces his standing as a stellar player.”
Kewell expressed less concern over the prospect of Salah leaving Liverpool, stating, “What he has accomplished during his time at Liverpool has been nothing short of remarkable. It’s a complicated situation considering his age and the contract uncertainties.”
“Liverpool would certainly feel his departure as he contributes significantly in terms of goals, yet, sometimes, a great player’s exit can create opportunities for others and empower them with added responsibilities.”
Recently, the likelihood of Salah remaining at Liverpool appeared to improve, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggesting that a deal is “imminent”.

“No one wishes to see him depart. His exit would be a significant loss, not just for Liverpool, but for the entire Premier League. He exemplifies professionalism, trains hard, and is dependable, playing every match. Young footballers should aspire to emulate his dedication.”
‘The finest centre-back in Premier League history’
Kewell has a clear opinion about who is invaluable to Liverpool: “For me, it’s Van Dijk. He has been monumental since his arrival at Liverpool. His presence, physicality, and style of play are impressive. I admire him.”
Recently, Van Dijk indicated his desire to remain with Liverpool and noted that a contract agreement is near, though nothing has been formalised as of yet.
“I have always rated him highly as a player, and I believe he ranks among the best centre-backs the Premier League has ever seen. In my view, he has the ability to make anyone alongside him feel at ease, regardless of their position.”
“The process may take time, as they have other players who can step in that role, but it will be a gradual transition.”
