Danish midfielder Anders Dreyer from San Diego FC delivered yet another outstanding performance this season, netting an incredible goal from just beyond the halfway line during a 4-2 triumph over Minnesota United in the MLS on Saturday evening.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the match, Dreyer recognised Minnesota goalkeeper Wessel Speel was off his line and skilfully lifted the ball over a scrambling Speel, scoring a potential Goal of the Year contender from 53.52 yards out.
This remarkable strike was just a preview of what Dreyer showcased later in the game. The Danish international, who netted a goal in Denmark’s 5-0 friendly victory against Lithuania earlier in the week, added a second by converting a penalty in the 66th minute. He then provided a brilliant inswinging cross for Milan Iloski, assisting him in scoring one of his two goals in the second half.
“Anders and I have a fantastic connection on the field,” Iloski remarked after the match. “I’m aware of my run; we’ve discussed that peeling run. His quality makes my job as a goal scorer so much simpler.”
With the possibility of being named in next month’s MLS All-Star game, Dreyer has now accumulated eight goals and nine assists this season, placing him at the top of the MLS leaderboard, just ahead of Lionel Messi (10 goals, 6 assists), making him a strong contender for the MVP accolade.
