Danish international midfielder Anders Dreyer, currently with San Diego FC, delivered yet another stellar performance in his standout season by scoring from just inside the halfway line during a 4-2 victory over Minnesota United in the MLS on Saturday evening.
After falling behind 1-0 early on, Dreyer cleverly noticed Minnesota goalkeeper Wessel Speel off his line and expertly lifted the ball over the scrambling keeper, netting a goal that could very well contend for Goal of the Year, officially recorded at 53.52 yards.
This stunning strike was just a teaser for what was to come, as Dreyer, who had also found the net in Denmark’s recent 5-0 friendly triumph against Lithuania, completed his brace with a penalty in the 66th minute. He then provided a brilliant inswinging cross to assist Milan Iloski, who scored his first of two second-half goals.
“Anders and I share a fantastic connection on the pitch,” Iloski remarked following the match. “I understand my run, and we’ve discussed that peeling run—the quality he brings makes my job as a goal scorer significantly easier.”
Dreyer, who is a strong candidate for next month’s MLS All-Star game, has now amassed eight goals and nine assists this season, leading the MLS statistics and sitting one goal ahead of Lionel Messi (10 goals, 6 assists), making him a frontrunner for the MVP award.
