Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, once again expressed his gratitude towards Kevin De Bruyne following the team’s vital 1-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
De Bruyne netted the only goal of the match during what may be one of his final appearances at Etihad Stadium, securing an essential win in City’s quest for Champions League qualification. This performance underscored what the squad will truly miss when he departs.
The 33-year-old Belgian announced last month that he would be leaving the club when his contract concludes at the end of the season.
“Just thank you,” Guardiola remarked to Sky Sports when reflecting on De Bruyne’s impact. “His contribution in the game against Crystal Palace when we were 2-0 down was immense, and today he scored again. I’m pleased it’s ending this way, and we have one more game at the Etihad.”
De Bruyne revealed his disappointment at not receiving a contract extension from City, insisting he still has much to offer.
“Many teammates have expressed their sadness about my departure too, but that’s just how life unfolds. I believe I’m performing well and contributing as a team player… I give my all and aim to win every match,” he said on Friday. “I think I’ve demonstrated that I’m still capable of playing at this level, especially given my performances over the past four or five weeks.”
Guardiola appeared uneasy when pressed about the possibility of extending De Bruyne’s contract.
“I wish the best for Kevin. It’s unfathomable to have spent so many years without him. He has been an extraordinary player, but the circumstances are as they are,” the manager stated.
“Replacing such a player is nearly impossible. It’s not only about his on-pitch performance but also what he represents to our fans for so many years. The success we’ve enjoyed is due to the players.”
Since joining the club from VfL Wolfsburg in 2015, De Bruyne has helped lift 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023. He has also earned the title of Premier League Player of the Season twice.
Football pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher emphasised that the focus as De Bruyne’s final season approaches should be on his contributions to the club.
“We shouldn’t get bogged down in the contract issue,” Carragher remarked during the Sky broadcast. “It’s been resolved, it’s done. Let’s appreciate him, recognise how phenomenal he’s been, and discuss the statue he deserves. For me, he’s the greatest player in Manchester City’s history.”
