Pep Guardiola has cautioned his Manchester City squad that qualification for the Champions League will not simply “appear out of nowhere” following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a team vying for a top-four finish, on Saturday.
City suffered yet another setback in what has been a challenging season as Callum Hudson-Odoi found a way past goalkeeper Ederson at the near post in the 83rd minute.
This defeat marked City’s ninth loss in the league this season, the most they’ve experienced since the 2019-20 campaign, leaving them nervously glancing over their shoulders in the battle for a top-four finish.
Guardiola is acutely aware that if City are to re-enter Europe’s premier club competition next season, they must overcome the sluggishness that has plagued them amid their significant decline.
“We need to win matches. We aren’t winning enough games in succession to feel secure. With 10 matches left, we have to aim for a lot of victories to qualify. That’s just how it is,” he stated.
“We must find a way to perform better. We need to take action as it will not come to us without effort. The reality is what it is.
“With 10 matches remaining, starting with Brighton next Saturday before the international break, we’ll see where we end up.”
True to the nature of City’s error-prone season, Ederson struggled with Hudson-Odoi’s winning goal, allowing the former Chelsea player to slot the ball home at the near post.
Currently sitting fourth, City are four points adrift of third-placed Forest and just one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, who are set to face relegation-threatened Leicester on Sunday.
Despite the result, Guardiola chose not to attribute blame to Ederson for the defeat.
“It is what it is; we can’t single out a player for blame, I prefer to focus on praise rather than blame,” he remarked. “I didn’t witness the moment; such things happen in football, and there’s nothing more to say.”
‘Boosts Your Confidence’
This was City’s first league defeat to Forest since 1997, highlighting a remarkable season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
However, Nuno remains realistic, stating that the victory does not ensure their qualification for the Champions League for the first time since the 1980/81 season.
“We are very pleased. We delivered an excellent performance against a tough opponent,” he commented.
“Facing some of the best teams can always instil confidence that you can compete at a high level against such skilled players.
“It helps us progress as a team, but it doesn’t change the challenges we face because the Premier League is extremely tough. We strive for good performances and positive results every time.”
“It’s all about our focus and approach to upcoming matches. Let’s enjoy this journey together. The players are doing brilliantly, and the support from our fans is fantastic, so let’s continue to enjoy the ride.”
Forest icon Stuart Pearce is presently recuperating in a Canadian hospital after falling ill while returning from a trip to Las Vegas.
Nuno expressed his support for Pearce, emphasising how Forest’s performance embodied the passion and pride synonymous with the former England defender.
“Stuart is not only a legend of our club; he is part of our family,” Nuno shared. “We all extend our best wishes and hope for his swift recovery.”
