Mason Greenwood has overtaken Didier Drogba to jointly hold the record for Olympique Marseille’s top scorer in Ligue 1 during the 21st century, achieving this feat in his inaugural season with the club.
The English forward marked this achievement by netting Marseille’s second goal in Saturday’s 3-1 triumph against Le Havre.
With the match level at 1-1 at Stade Oceane, following Senegalese international Issa Soumare’s equaliser to Amine Gouiri’s initial goal, Greenwood gave Marseille the lead with just five minutes left on the clock.
After receiving an assist from the impact substitute Luis Enrique, the 23-year-old cut in from the right and unleashed a spectacular 25-yard shot into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Mathieu Gorgelin helpless.
In doing so, the former Manchester United player surpassed the record set by the iconic Ivorian striker during his debut season at Stade Vélodrome in the 2003-2004 campaign.
During that season, Drogba netted 32 goals in 55 appearances, propelling Marseille to the UEFA Cup final before making a move to Chelsea, where he would establish himself as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats.
In a recent interview, Drogba commended Marseille’s performance in the 2024-25 season, despite their ongoing battle to break their title drought.
“Given the resources and strength of Paris Saint-Germain today, I can only label this a successful season. We are the second-best team in the league,” he stated.
“I believe that’s a positive indication because it allows the club to build on certain aspects and enter the next season with a solid foundation. However, it’s up to the coach to ensure that happens.”
Greenwood, who has enjoyed a stellar campaign under manager Roberto De Zerbi, is currently level with Bafetimbi Gomis on 20 Ligue 1 goals.
He has the opportunity to surpass the former France international when Marseille takes on Rennes in their final fixture of the season on May 17.
The recent victory has solidified Marseille’s place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
