Rayo Vallecano has achieved European qualification for the first time in 25 years, as a 0-0 stalemate with Mallorca secured them a spot in the top eight of LaLiga and a place in the upcoming UEFA Conference League.
Mallorca, who recently fell out of the intense battle for the final European slots due to consecutive defeats, made it clear from the outset that they intended to put up a fight against the Red Sashes.
The early stages of the match were marked by nerves for Rayo, who only began to pose a threat after the 20-minute mark. Florian Lejeune saw a header miss the target, failing to score in his third consecutive home fixture, while Isi Palazon shot wide from outside the box.
Alvaro Garcia was the first to register a shot on target just past the half-hour, but his attempt was pushed away by Dominik Greif, who later watched another long-range effort from Garcia soar over the crossbar before half-time.
At the other end, Mallorca struggled to create danger, with their star player Vedat Muriqi – who had netted in all six previous encounters with Rayo in LaLiga – finding it difficult to get involved.
Their lack of offensive threat nearly proved costly just before the break when Unai Lopez weaved through Mallorca’s defence, only to have his shot parried away by Greif.

An unfortunate start to the second half nearly cost Rayo, with Mallorca’s Muriqi missing a free header before curling a shot wide from the right side.
Inigo Perez made a substitution that seemed to invigorate the home side, prompting Greif to produce a remarkable double save to deny both Garcia and Palazon.
As the anxiety around Vallecas faded with news that Alaves had taken the lead against Osasuna, Rayo’s attacking struggles continued, with Jorge de Frutos – who had scored in his last two matches – firing over from a promising position.
Muriqi’s exit due to a persistent shoulder injury reduced Mallorca’s threat, but Rayo still struggled to seal the game. Lejeune saw a header pushed away from the top corner by Greif, who was also quick to deny De Frutos from close range with impressive reflexes.
Ultimately, Rayo’s missed chances did not hinder their European qualification hopes – even as Osasuna found a late goal elsewhere – wrapping up the season with a laudable five-match unbeaten streak. Mallorca, on the other hand, managed just one victory in that timeframe, but Greif’s performance ensured their unbeaten run against Rayo extended to seven LaLiga encounters.
