Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Jari De Busser expressed that he is living his “childhood dream” after guiding his team to their maiden KNVB Beker victory in the club’s history.
The Eagles triumphed over AZ in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 4-2 after the match ended 1-1 following 120 minutes of play. De Busser was pivotal throughout the match, making an impressive eight saves, including a vital stop in the 93rd minute of regular time.
The Belgian shot-stopper took a moment to reflect on his monumental achievement in Rotterdam. “It’s surreal. I’m lost for words,” he remarked. “I felt this way after the semi-final against PSV as well. It’s truly a childhood dream.”
De Busser capped off his outstanding performance by being heroic during the penalty shootout, saving two consecutive penalties that put his side on the brink of victory. Centre-half Julius Dirksen sealed the win by converting the Eagles’ fourth and final penalty, earning the club its first major trophy in nearly a century.
“I always went to the right corner and tried to play a bit of mind games. That’s part of the thrill,” he noted.
