KNVB Beker champions Go Ahead Eagles are set to lose their manager, Paul Simonis, as he has reportedly struck a deal to join Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg.
Having taken over from Rene Hake, the 40-year-old Simonis made history in his inaugural season by securing the KNVB Beker, marking the club’s first major trophy.
As per the German publication Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Simonis has finalized an agreement with VfL Wolfsburg, who have been on the lookout for a new manager following the dismissal of Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The club is reportedly set to pay under one million euros for the promising Simonis, who previously held assistant roles at Go Ahead Eagles and sc Heerenveen, and only recently extended his contract with Go Ahead Eagles until the summer of 2027.
Simonis outperformed FC Copenhagen’s Jacob Neestrup, who was not permitted to leave his current role, in the pursuit of the position after “fully convincing” club director Peter Christiansen and making a “strong impression” during discussions.
Disappointment at Ajax
Following his stellar season with the Eagles, Simonis was seen as a frontrunner for the Ajax position after Francesco Farioli’s exit. The Dutchman believed he was the prime candidate; however, Ajax ultimately opted for former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga, leaving Simonis reportedly “very disappointed.”
An announcement regarding his move is expected shortly.
