Collingwood’s premiership-winning captain Tony Shaw has identified five teams he believes have what it takes to clinch the premiership, now that we’re approaching the quarter mark of the AFL season.
Unsurprisingly, the reigning champions, Brisbane, are included on his list, while last year’s runners-up, Sydney, are conspicuously absent.
Shaw has chosen to back seasoned contenders, dismissing the prospects of emerging clubs like Gold Coast and Adelaide.

“I believe Brisbane is in contention for the premiership,” Shaw commented on 3AW.
“GWS has the potential if they can perform at their peak, but they occasionally suffer dips in performance during matches.
“Geelong still has a shot because they will likely achieve a high seeding with so many games played at their home ground. When they’re in form, they can defeat anyone.
“Of course, there’s Collingwood. And I still think Hawthorn is capable.
“I believed the game on Easter Monday had a finals-like atmosphere, and they gained valuable experience, despite having an unusual performance the week before. Those are my five.
“As for Adelaide, I don’t think they can take it. The Western Bulldogs have shown great promise, but losing Sam Darcy will be a tough blow to recover from, and I’m not confident about Gold Coast.
“Carlton? Don’t make me laugh. And I don’t see Sydney making it either.”
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd shares Shaw’s sentiments regarding the five teams but anticipates the emergence of another contender as the season unfolds.
“I agree with that assessment. It wouldn’t surprise me if a dark horse emerges, be it Adelaide or Gold Coast, making it to a preliminary final,” Lloyd stated.
“There’s always a team that rises to the challenge and could become a contender.”
