Queens Park Rangers have officially announced the acquisition of Ghanaian winger Kwame Poku from Peterborough United as they gear up for the upcoming Championship season.
The 23-year-old has signed a permanent contract with QPR following a successful four-year stint at Peterborough. The specifics of the transfer fee have not been disclosed, owing to age and development compensation regulations.
Although Poku’s contract with Peterborough lapsed this summer, both clubs negotiated a fee that includes a sell-on clause, allowing his former team to benefit from any future achievements.
Poku arrives at Loftus Road after an impressive tenure at Peterborough, during which he made 147 appearances and netted 30 goals across all competitions.
Despite suffering a hamstring injury that sidelined him for part of the 2024/25 season, he still managed to capture consecutive Sky Bet League One Player of the Month awards and was selected for the League One Team of the Season.
His stellar performances last season included 12 goals and eight assists in 27 League One matches.
Poku’s contributions were pivotal in leading Peterborough to the play-off semi-finals as well as securing two EFL Trophy victories at Wembley Stadium during his tenure with the club.
Before joining Peterborough, Poku kicked off his professional career at Colchester United, where he quickly made a name for himself as one of League One’s most promising young talents.
His consistent displays and rising profile caught the attention of various clubs across Europe and the Championship, with QPR CEO Christian Nourry noting that Poku opted for Loftus Road over teams with “considerably larger budgets.”
In his initial interview with QPR, Poku conveyed his excitement about the move, expressing optimism regarding the project at the club.
“The project they are building here genuinely excites me, and I am eager to help elevate QPR to the next level. There are a lot of talented players here, and I believe these are promising times for the club.”
Poku’s signing signals QPR’s ambitious strategy as they aim to make a serious push for promotion in the Championship after finishing 15th last season. For Poku, it presents a fresh chance to shine on a larger platform and continue his upward journey in the sport.
He will also be hoping that competing in the Championship can bolster his chances of a call-up to the Black Stars, having made just one appearance—his debut against São Tomé and Príncipe in 2021.
