The Black Damsels, representing Ghana’s U15 girls’ team, etched their names in history by securing victory at the 2025 CAF African Schools Football Championship (ASFC) with a decisive 2-0 win over Uganda at the University of Ghana Stadium.
This achievement marked a remarkable campaign for the home side, who showcased their dominance throughout the tournament, while the U15 boys’ team fought valiantly to earn a hard-won third-place finish.
In their first foray into the competition, the Black Damsels exhibited extraordinary poise and skill, remaining unbeaten from start to finish. They topped Group A with victories over Morocco (1-0), Benin (2-0), and Malawi (3-0), before narrowly surpassing defending champions South Africa 3-2 in a thrilling semi-final.
The final featured standout performances from Belinda Kpentey and Daniella Abass. Kpentey opened the scoring in the second half, thanks to a brilliant solo effort by Christiana Ashiaku, who navigated past three defenders to set up the goal. Abass then confirmed the win with an expertly placed finish, underscoring the offensive flair that characterised Ghana’s campaign.
For their triumphant efforts, the Ghanaian girls were awarded a cash prize of $300,000, while Uganda received $200,000 for being the runners-up.
The U15 boys’ team, under the guidance of coach Kwaku Danso, mirrored the resilience of their female counterparts. After a tight semi-final defeat against Tanzania, they came back to beat Uganda 2-1 in an exhilarating third-place playoff. Trailing 1-0 at the break, the team mounted a stunning comeback in the second half, with crucial contributions from their substitutes.
The boys’ tournament journey featured impressive performances in the group stage, where they triumphed over Uganda (2-0), South Africa (1-0), and Algeria (3-0). Although they faced a setback in the semi-finals, they displayed great determination in the playoff, ultimately clinching third place and a $150,000 prize.
This year’s CAF African Schools Football Championship was notably hosted in Ghana for the first time, with matches taking place at the University of Ghana Stadium. This third edition of the competition aims to enhance youth football across the continent.
