Geelong’s assistant coach, James Kelly, has expressed his surprise at the leadership qualities displayed by new addition Bailey Smith.
At only 24 and settling into a new environment after moving from the Western Bulldogs, where he faced an ACL injury before last season, Smith has swiftly made an impactful presence at the club.
This strong impression could position him as a serious candidate for the club’s next captaincy.
“One aspect I underestimated was his potential for leadership,” Kelly remarked during a media session in Geelong on Friday.
“He has an excellent ability to engage others and bring them along with him. He is exceptionally diligent and professional.”

“He’s been fantastic, and I believe he has settled into the group exceptionally well.
“He brings an abundance of energy and is just a great character. The boys really enjoy having him here.”
However, it’s not solely Smith’s natural ability to lead that has caught the coaches’ attention; they’ve also noticed his efforts outside of regular training.
“He began putting in extra practice right from his first day here, and now others are joining him for those sessions,” Kelly added.

“As a coach, this is precisely what you’d like to observe. It’s inspiring to witness his leadership resonate within the group, showing him as a fine example for others to follow.”
“From my perspective thus far, he is a true professional.”
In his initial official performance donning the Geelong colours last week, Smith was impressive, amassing 10 possessions within the first 15 minutes of a match simulation against the Hawks.
The Cats are scheduled to face the Essendon Bombers next Tuesday in a practice match before heading to the Gabba to take on the reigning champions, Brisbane, in the Opening Round.
