Gareth Southgate, the former manager of the England national team, has expressed his interest in taking up the coaching position with Poland as the countdown to the 2026 World Cup begins.
As reported by Polish publication Przeglad Sportowy Onet, Southgate has reached out to the Polish Football Association following the unexpected resignation of Michal Probierz. This resignation occurred on Thursday after a public fallout with Poland’s legendary forward, Robert Lewandowski, who announced he would not play for the national team under Probierz’s management.
At 54 years of age, Southgate has been out of coaching since stepping down from his role with the Three Lions after they were defeated by Spain in the EURO 2024 final. During his tenure, he was one of the highest-paid national team coaches globally, reportedly earning around £5 million annually from the FA.
Should he take the role with Poland, his salary would be considerably less, as former Portugal manager Fernando Santos was said to have earned approximately €2.5 million (£2.1 million) per year.
Prior to their recent appointment of David Moyes, Everton was also rumoured to be interested in securing Southgate’s services, alongside Manchester United, who ultimately chose Ruben Amorim for their managerial vacancy.
Despite not having secured a major trophy during his eight-year tenure, Southgate is still regarded as one of England’s most successful managers. His extensive international experience could make him an ideal candidate for the Polish national side as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.
