Former England manager Gareth Southgate has put his name forward for the vacant coaching position with Poland as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup.
As reported by Polish publication Przeglad Sportowy Onet, Southgate has reached out to the Polish Football Association following the unexpected resignation of Michal Probierz. This decision came after a public fallout with the legendary Robert Lewandowski, who declared he would not represent his national team whilst Probierz remained in charge.
At 54 years old, Southgate has not taken on any new coaching roles since departing from his position with the Three Lions after their defeat to Spain in the final of EURO 2024. During his tenure, he was one of the highest-paid international managers globally, earning around £5 million per annum from the English FA.
In contrast, his remuneration with Poland would be significantly less, with former Portugal manager Fernando Santos reportedly earning around €2.5 million (£2.1 million) a year.
There was also interest from Everton in securing Southgate’s services before they opted to reappoint David Moyes, as well as speculation from Manchester United prior to them hiring Ruben Amorim.
Southgate is regarded as one of England’s most successful managers, despite not clinching a major trophy during his eight years in charge. Nevertheless, his extensive international experience could make him an ideal candidate for Poland as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup in 2026.
