Arsenal may be without centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes for next week’s Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid, as manager Mikel Arteta revealed on Tuesday that the Brazilian sustained a hamstring injury during their 2-1 victory over Fulham.
Gabriel departed the pitch just 15 minutes into the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, adding to Arteta’s injury woes that have plagued the squad throughout a challenging season, with numerous key players suffering from long-term injuries.
In addition, Dutch full-back Jurrien Timber was also substituted in the second half after experiencing discomfort in his knee.
Following the match, Arteta informed reporters that both players would undergo assessments on Wednesday to determine the severity of their conditions.
“Gabby felt something in his hamstring, but we’re unsure of the extent at this point,” Arteta stated. “Jurrien was struggling early in the match; he managed to carry on, but eventually he could no longer continue.”
He expressed frustration at seeing four defensive players sidelined due to injury within a week.
Riccardo Calafiori, 22, also sustained an injury while on international duty with Italy, and right-back Ben White is once again unavailable, having seen little game time this season.
When asked if he had ever faced such a barrage of injuries in his career, Arteta replied: “No… but it is what it is.”
Another defender, Takehiro Tomiyasu, has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are also unavailable due to hamstring and cruciate ligament injuries, respectively.
The Gunners will travel to face Everton on Saturday before hosting Real Madrid on April 8, a pivotal Champions League match that presents Arsenal with their most promising opportunity for silverware this season.
