Fulham Football Club has strongly condemned the racist and homophobic abuse directed at defender Calvin Bassey across social media following his goal in Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United.
The Nigerian international put Fulham ahead just before the break in the match that ended in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, before the team triumphed over the hosts in the penalty shootout to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled by the racist and homophobic abuse that Calvin Bassey has received and shared on social media following yesterday’s FA Cup match against Manchester United,” the club stated in a press release on Monday.
“We unequivocally condemn this despicable behaviour, which is unacceptable in both football and society. We stand firmly behind Calvin Bassey and will provide him with our full support.”
“We are committed to collaborating with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible for these hateful messages, and we will pursue the most severe repercussions against them.”
Previously, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker encountered similar racist abuse online after their defeat to Juventus in the Champions League last December.
In January, City forward Khadija Shaw had to sit out a match due to mental health concerns, following racist abuse received after a loss to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League.
“Fulham Football Club is devoted to taking a strong stance against all forms of discrimination and remains focused on promoting an atmosphere of respect and inclusion,” the statement continued.
Fulham will face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 29.
