On Sunday, FC Porto confirmed the appointment of Francesco Farioli as their new head coach, taking over from Martin Anselmi. Farioli previously managed Ajax and has signed a contract that will see him at the club until 2027.
After arriving in Invicta on Thursday evening, Francesco Farioli’s official unveiling as Porto’s head coach took place this Sunday. His primary goal is to lead the team to the league championship.
Farioli replaces Martin Anselmi, whose departure was announced on 1 July, and is expected to reinvigorate the squad with his tactical acumen.
Hailing from Italy, the 36-year-old began his coaching career focusing on goalkeeping at various clubs, including Margine Coperta, Fortis Juventus, and Lucchese. He later ventured to the Middle East, where he worked at the Aspire Academy and with the Qatari national youth teams.
In late 2017, he returned to Italy to join the coaching staff under Roberto De Zerbi at Benevento and Sassuolo. In the summer of 2020, he embarked on his first managerial role in Turkey with Karagumruk, followed by Alanyaspor.
In July 2023, he was approached by Nice, and his impressive performance in Ligue 1 caught the attention of clubs in the Netherlands. While he had a commendable season with Ajax, his team ultimately fell short of the title after relinquishing a substantial lead to PSV in crucial matches.
Farioli eventually parted ways with the Eredivisie giants due to differing views with the club’s management.
