On Sunday, FC Porto confirmed the appointment of Francesco Farioli, who previously managed Ajax, as their new head coach, taking over from Martin Anselmi.
After his arrival in Invicta on Thursday night, Farioli was officially unveiled as Porto’s new manager, signing a contract that extends until 2027.
Farioli steps into the role following Anselmi’s departure, which was announced on 1 July, with a primary aim of clinching the league title.
At 36 years of age and hailing from Italy, Farioli began his coaching career focusing on goalkeepers with three clubs in his homeland: Margine Coperta, Fortis Juventus, and Lucchese. He then made his way to the Middle East, where he worked at the Aspire Academy and with Qatari youth teams.
In late 2017, he returned to Italy to join Roberto De Zerbi’s coaching staff at Benevento and Sassuolo. The summer of 2020 saw him relocate to Turkey, marking his managerial debut with Karagumruk before moving on to Alanyaspor.
This past July, he was approached by Nice, where his successful run in the French league led to a stint in the Netherlands. Last season at Ajax was strong, but despite a commanding lead in the standings, his side faltered in the final matches and missed out on the title.
Farioli subsequently departed from the Dutch club following disagreements with the board.
