The inaugural series of Formula Regional racecars will be rebranded as the AU3 Championship, kicking off its first season in May at Phillip Island.
This exciting rebranding signifies a new era for the series, with a strong emphasis on providing an affordable and competitive platform for emerging drivers in Australia. It also opens up genuine pathways to European teams, bolstered by the announcement of a new partnership with Hillspeed.
The rebranding initiative is a joint effort between Tim Macrow Racing and Motorsport Australia, aimed at maintaining cost-effectiveness while aligning the championship with esteemed series such as GB3 in the UK. This series has a notable history of nurturing F1 talents including Lando Norris, George Russell, and most recently, Oliver Bearman.
“It’s thrilling to create a genuine local pathway, offering drivers relevant experience at a fraction of the cost,” remarked Tim Macrow.
“This rebranding aims to streamline that pathway and enhance the cohesiveness of Australian motorsport.”
The AU3 Championship will utilise the latest FIA-certified Tatuus Formula Regional cars, allowing all current specification vehicles—including Toyota and Alfa Romeo options available in Australia—to compete.
Inspired by the successful framework of the UK’s GB3 Championship, AU3 aims to provide valuable development opportunities for Australian drivers, helping them hone their skills locally while paving the way for potential progression into European motorsport. The overall champion of the AU3 Championship will receive an extensive multi-day testing package with GB3 leader and AU3 partner, Hillspeed, valued at over AUD$35,000. Additionally, Hillspeed will subsidise a test package for the runner-up, contributing to a total championship prize pool exceeding AUD$60,000.
“The prizes through our partner Hillspeed in the UK are incredibly exciting and provide exactly what aspiring Australian drivers need to elevate their careers,” Macrow continued.
The AU3 Championship is dedicated to promoting growth within the motorsport sector by expanding its pathways programme. In addition to opportunities for drivers, AU3 is offering placements for students in areas such as media, marketing, mechanical engineering, and other fields, equipping aspiring professionals with hands-on experience in high-level motorsport. The championship has partnered with universities and the Formula SAE programme to provide mentorship, education, and career development opportunities across various disciplines.
As a complement to the AU3 Championship launch, Tim Macrow Racing will also operate three F4 cars in the newly rebranded AU4 Championship, giving youngsters as young as 14 the chance to climb the motorsport ladder right here in Australia.
The opening round of the AU3 Championship is set to take place at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit from May 16-18, 2025.
