Few careers can boast of such a unique trajectory as that of Mateusz Bogusz. Hailing from the unassuming mining town of Gwiazdy Ruda Slaska, this young Pole has leveraged his talent to experience more than many players do in their entire careers, all by the age of 23. So how has he begun to carve out a reputation in a league that even Sergio Ramos has opted to join?
Mateusz’s football journey began in a rather ordinary setting. At just 10 years old, he made the move to Ruch Chorzow, a club known for its achievements. Following hundreds of impressive performances, interest from Italian and German clubs grew as he turned 17, but Leeds United ultimately secured his signature.
At Leeds, a club with a storied history, he had the opportunity to train under renowned manager Marcelo Bielsa and alongside fellow Pole Mateusz Klich, a key player in Bielsa’s plans. However, despite receiving praise, Bogusz’s ambitions for regular first-team football felt unfulfilled.
Breaking into a squad on a promotion push for the Premier League proved challenging. Nevertheless, the coaching staff fought to keep him at the club, but Bogusz was determined not to remain a benchwarmer. With the assistance of his agent, he arranged a loan deal to UD Logrones, thanks to the strong ties between the clubs.
Although he experienced a less-than-stellar season with the struggling side in LaLiga2, the move to a new environment was refreshing. This prompted his next adventure to the ever-joyful Ibiza, where he rediscovered his form and showcased his knack for spectacular goals, frequently scored from free kicks or long distances. At this time, he couldn’t have imagined that his Balearic adventure was merely the beginning of a much longer journey.
“I sit right next to Hugo (Lloris) in the changing room, just one seat away. We’ve developed a good rapport. He’s a world champion, but ultimately just a regular bloke. I feel at ease with him, and we chat about everything,” he remarked.
“He always provides tips when he sees something during training or matches, but it’s tough to pinpoint specifics on a daily basis. I definitely don’t feel like I’m sitting next to a champion. To me, he’s just a mate in the locker room, and that’s what everyone appreciates about him most.”

Bogusz has acknowledged that his time with LA FC was always intended to be temporary, but he leaves behind an impressive legacy: 19 goals and 12 assists across 69 appearances, which is commendable for an attacking midfielder.
This record has certainly piqued the interest of various clubs. Yet, when Polish journalists anticipated his next move at European airports, Bogusz once again threw everyone a curveball by donning a sombrero and flying to Mexico, where he signed with Cruz Azul. This made him only the fourth Polish player to compete in Mexico, and the first in three decades!

How is he faring in Liga MX? Remarkably well! Bogusz has made an instant impact, securing a spot in the starting eleven and notching a goal along with two assists in his first ten matches. His success is a testament to his mental fortitude and ability to handle pressure in such demanding environments.
Additionally, Bogusz is a distinctive footballer, not just focused on playing but also eager to explore new horizons and cultures through his career. This adventurous spirit continues to win him fans across the globe.
After years of following various colourful leagues, Polish supporters now share a common thought: if they find themselves awake in the wee hours, it’s definitely for Bogusz.
Cruz Azul is set to face Toluca on Sunday at 03:05 CET
