Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, a full-back for the USA, has established himself as one of the top players in his position within the Premier League this season.
For those who have followed the career of the Buckinghamshire-born defender, this progress is hardly surprising.
Although many recognise him as the most reliable left-back in the Premier League, even outperforming Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, Robinson’s ascent has not been a sudden one.
His breakthrough came when he moved from Wigan to Fulham just before the start of the 2020/21 season. Despite facing relegation initially, he played a key role in the club’s fight back and has become an indispensable part of the squad since then.
Robinson was awarded Fulham’s Player of the Season for 2023/24, and his stellar performances have only continued as the current campaign unfolds, with noticeable improvements in his game.
A journey from Everton
Robinson’s football journey began at Everton, located over 200 miles to the north of London, leaving traces of his accent that astute listeners may pick up on.
He nurtured dreams of donning the Toffees’ first-team jersey from the age of 11 until just prior to turning 22.
Injuries, however, thwarted Robinson’s chances of breaking into the Everton senior squad; a particularly severe injury at just 17 requiring knee surgery was a bitter blow for the young talent, especially after being honoured as Everton’s U18 Players’ Player of the Year shortly beforehand.

After his recovery, he became a regular in the U23s before heading out on a short-term loan to Bolton just before celebrating his 20th birthday.
His notable performances earned him an extended loan until the end of the 2017/18 season, where he outshone experienced competition from Andrew Taylor, who had previously claimed the position.
Wigan takes a chance
Robinson’s success at Bolton caught the attention of Wigan, who brought him in on an initial loan deal from Everton.
His continued excellence in the Championship led to him earning a cap for the USA in May 2018, where he opted to represent his father’s homeland over an invitation from England’s U21 squad.
It became evident that Robinson was on a trajectory towards greatness after yet another impressive spell in the second tier, culminating in a permanent transfer to Wigan prior to the 2019/20 season.

A few months later, during the January transfer window, a move to AC Milan was agreed, but the transfer fell through after medical tests revealed a heart condition (which has since been resolved).
After Wigan’s relegation, Robinson made a move to Premier League side Fulham for £2 million.
Fulham reaps the rewards
Robinson’s journey at Fulham started steadily, often sharing duties with Ola Aina.
Following the club’s relegation in the 2020/21 season, he was pivotal in their swift return to the Premier League, earning a spot in the official Championship Team of the Season.
As Fulham – and Robinson – prospered in the 2022/23 season, it was remarkable to think they had competed in the second tier just a year prior, finishing comfortably in the league’s upper half.
Among the league’s elite
Robinson’s incredible speed and stamina, which allow him to effectively cover the left side throughout matches, have crowned him as one of Europe’s most dependable left-backs.
Statistics from Opta by Stats Perform indicate that his recorded top speed reaches an impressive 35.6 km/h, placing him among the fastest in the Premier League.
His ability to handle one-on-one situations is commendable, having successfully contained renowned players like Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka. His defensive prowess is further evidenced by leading the league in interceptions last season, racking up 81.

Offensively, Robinson has become a crucial asset for Fulham. He was at the top of the class in Europe’s elite leagues for interceptions during the 2023/24 season and demonstrated significant creativity, with 10 assists recorded by February of this year.
While he has yet to find the back of the net and has a passing accuracy hovering around 80%, his impact at both ends of the pitch is undeniable.
In comparing him to players like Robertson, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Pervis Estupinan, and Tyrick Mitchell, Robinson—who transitioned from a winger role—leans more towards traditional defensive responsibilities, yet his attacking abilities are swiftly evolving.
There will certainly be numerous clubs across Europe keeping an eye on his progress this coming summer, but the willingness of Fulham to entertain offers remains to be seen.
