Tottenham’s captain, Son Heung-Min, addressed the media in the club’s final press conference before the Europa League showdown with Manchester United.
Son revealed that the primary reason he has remained at Tottenham is his desire to achieve what many before him could not: securing a trophy for the club.
Having faced defeat in all of the finals he has participated in with the team – against Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League and Manchester City in the 2021 League Cup – he now finds himself on the brink of potentially lifting silverware this week.
The Spurs captain reflected on the significance of winning the trophy after years of disappointment.
“A final is a final, and we must maintain our focus, concentrating on ourselves and giving our utmost,” he stated.
“It would be incredibly special and mark a historic moment, but after ten years here, my main goal is to win a trophy, something that has eluded us during my entire tenure.”
“Tomorrow is going to be a massive day for the club, the lads, and for me personally.”
Devotion from Korean supporters
The South Korean star also expressed gratitude towards his supporters back home who will be watching at the early hours, hoping for a triumph.
“I truly appreciate their unwavering support, whether it’s early morning or late at night. They’re always there for us, and I want to repay them with a smile and the trophy, creating a historic moment together.”
A trophy could transform Spurs’ mindset
Son further discussed the potential shift in mentality at Spurs and whether this might be his final opportunity to claim silverware.
“We often say that the first step is the hardest, and securing that trophy could fundamentally change our mentality, allowing us to compete for even more titles.”
“The future is uncertain. Next year we might find ourselves competing in the Champions League. The opportunity before me is real; it’s a fact.
“This is a final, a Europa League final. I’m not preoccupied with whether this is my last chance to win a trophy here; I’m focused on seizing this opportunity.”
Spurs must look past league struggles
He also touched on the need to disregard their league performance going into the match, highlighting their differing fortunes in Europe this season.
“Where we currently stand in the league is unacceptable, but this isn’t the time to dwell on it. Reaching the final requires overcoming strong teams, maintaining discipline while playing away, and having faith in ourselves.
“Winning a trophy could transform the narrative of a poor league season. Tottenham has been missing that, and we have the chance to change it.”
Son is fit and ready for the challenge
Lastly, he commented on his fitness and readiness to participate in what stands to be the biggest match of the season and potentially the club’s history.
“I’m fit and ready. After recovering from injury, my first match back was against Crystal Palace, and I played against Aston Villa afterwards. I didn’t expect to play for that duration, but I managed to hold up well.
“Physically, I’m prepared – ready to go. The team is also set for the biggest game of the season.”
