FIFA has made the decision to remove Mexican club Club Leon from the upcoming Club World Cup and is set to announce a replacement in the near future. This move comes as both Club Leon and Pachuca, who have qualified for the competition after winning the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League, are under the same ownership group, a situation that contravenes the tournament’s regulations.
FIFA’s announcement regarding Club Leon’s exclusion from the 2025 Club World Cup stems from their failure to adhere to the multi-ownership rules, which prohibit clubs owned by the same entity from participating in the same tournament.
This decision follows the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against both Club Leon and Pachuca, which are part of the Pachuca Group. The matter was escalated to the FIFA Appeals Committee for review.
Upon examining the evidence, the chairman of the Appeals Committee determined that the two clubs did not comply with the multiple ownership regulations outlined in Article 10, paragraph 1, of the tournament rules. Consequently, FIFA ruled out Club Leon’s participation.
The organisation confirmed that an additional club will be brought in to take the vacant spot, with details to be shared shortly.
Club Leon was initially placed in Group D, alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance de Tunis.
