FIFA has made the decision to exclude Mexican club Club Leon from the upcoming Club World Cup, with an announcement regarding a replacement expected soon. This ruling stems from the fact that both Club Leon and Pachuca, who qualified by winning the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League, are owned by the same group—a situation that violates the competition’s regulations.
The governing body has confirmed that Club Leon will not participate in the 2025 Club World Cup, citing breaches of multi-ownership rules designed to prevent competing clubs from sharing ownership.
This ruling follows the initiation of disciplinary actions against both Club Leon and Pachuca, both of which are part of the Pachuca Group. Consequently, the case was escalated to FIFA’s Appeals Committee for further examination.
Upon review, the chairman of the Appeals Committee determined that the two clubs failed to comply with the multiple ownership guidelines detailed in Article 10, paragraph 1, of the tournament’s regulations. Consequently, FIFA has deemed Club Leon ineligible for the tournament.
The governing body has stated that a new club will be appointed to fill the vacant slot, with details expected to be released soon.
Club Leon was originally placed in Group D, alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance de Tunis.
