Boca Juniors’ head coach, Fernando Gago, has parted ways with the club after a little over six months at the helm, following a 2-1 defeat to fierce rivals River Plate in the Argentine Superclasico over the weekend, as reported by local media on Tuesday.
Gago, a former midfielder for both Argentina and Boca, assumed the managerial role in October. He becomes the third consecutive manager to exit without securing any silverware, joining Jorge Almiron and Diego Martinez in that regard.
“This is as far as he goes,” remarked Mauricio Serna, a member of Boca’s governing council, as cited by TYC Sports.
“It hasn’t been an easy decision, as he’s part of the family, but we are here to make tough choices. We are very thankful. He fulfilled his duties to the best of his ability.”
Boca Juniors had not responded immediately for comment.
Under Gago’s management, the team secured only 17 victories out of 30 matches and faced an early departure from the Copa Libertadores after being eliminated in the second round by Peru’s Alianza Lima on penalties.
Mariano Herron, the assistant coach, will take on the role of interim manager while the club searches for a new head coach, according to media reports.
Boca currently sits at the top of Group A in the Torneo Apertura, which marks the first phase of the Argentine top-flight season. They are set to face Tigre next weekend.
