The initial practice session for the 89th Masters was halted due to severe weather, prompting authorities to evacuate spectators and suspend play.
An announcement from the Augusta National Golf Club advised attendees to leave the course at 11:25am local time, while several players were still on the driving range and putting greens at the time of the alert.
Typically, around 50,000 supporters turn up for the practice round ahead of Thursday’s play (AEST), but officials confirmed that the course would remain closed, with ticket buyers due to receive refunds in May.

“We regret that our patrons could not fully experience today’s practice round, but ensuring the safety of everyone at Augusta National is our utmost priority, which led to the decision to cancel,” stated Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley.
“We eagerly anticipate welcoming our Monday patrons back next year and celebrating an exceptional 89th Masters tournament this week.”

An additional statement from Augusta National said: “Given the anticipated adverse weather conditions and safety issues, patron entry will not commence as originally planned for Monday’s practice round.
“All parking facilities for patrons will remain closed until further updates are provided.
“Patrons are advised not to approach Augusta National until more information is made available.”
Local media in Augusta have urged residents to avoid the area due to “destructive wind gusts and heavy rains that could result in flash flooding.”
Adverse weather has historically affected the tournament, with three large trees uprooted before play was suspended in 2023.
